Huw is a multi talented individual with a passion for science and adventure. He runs a company in Wales that focuses on innovative ways to engage the public through informal learning and adventure sports. Recognising that the uptake of science and sport are both key areas, he united his passion for the two into a brand called Science Junkie. Trained in Astronomy and Space Science at University level and an endurance individual come mountaineer, Huw is uniquely suited to lead an expedition such as this. Qualifications and Skills: Trained in observational astronomy, proficient with telescopes of all kinds and good with astrophotography.
Description: Looking for an Observational Astronomer to join a team of 3 others on an expedition to the West Pacific Rim to view the 2012 Venus Transit. The team will set off from Britain in April 2011 and drive across Europe and Russia to the west pacific seaboard. The role of the astronomer on this trip will be to look deliver educational information to the crew along the way, liaise with the home team on content for the blogs. Take photos of the night sky and sun along the way. And be solely in charge of viewing and recording the Venus Transit at the final point and measuring contact times. Currently wintering at the British Antarctic Surveys (BAS) most southerly research station as a mechanical services technician. Duties include the maintenance and upkeep of all mechanical equipment on base – including but not limited to : power generation plant, fresh water production equipment, sewage treatment plant (EEERGHH) , fuel storage and transfer systems and vehicle maintenance.
Involved in off road motorsport at a national level in both trials and speed events often gaining podium positions. heavily involved in planning and setting out events for ‘Wye and welsh land rover club’ as well as planning and delivering scenic green lane tours of Wales for the ‘Lamb and Flag Inn’ who pride themselves on offering the best hospitality and off roading in south Wales for visiting fellow land rover enthusiasts .

A journalism graduate turned PR, Liz has a passion for communicating and experience of woking in a number of fields; in both the public and private sectors as well as the charity sector, so brings to this project a huge understanding of working in very different environments with very different aims. A firm understanding of the media industry and how it is constantly evolving, with an ability to build strong relationships, Liz ensures that her story gets told to as many people as possible in as many ways as possible. Enthusiastic about science and all things adventure and with vast experience of helping to organise and run UK- wide campaigns using all platforms, Liz will approach the Venus project in a similar fashion.
